The Sensor Companion™ is a small, portable, universal instrument controller that can be used with a portable instrument, industrial sensor, or gas detector. Unlike competitive products, Sensor Companion™ fits in your tool kit and can be used in the field, laboratory, or instrument workshop. The purpose of the Sensor Companion™ is to receive and process sensor or gas detector output signals, generate and log alarms, log data, and allow the user to diagnose and reduce false alarms and misdetections.  Three items are provided with the Sensor Companion™: 1) the portable Sensor Companion™ unit, 2) an installation package for the Sensor Companion™ Support Software, and 3) the Sensor Companion™ power supply including a battery pack for remote operation and an external power module for fixed site operation.  The Sensor Companion™ can be operated from its battery pack, 120-240VAC 50-60 Hz, or 7 to 30 VDC.  The Sensor Companion™ accepts data from a user-supplied companion instrument via a 4 to 20 mA current loop or a 0 to 5 volt input signal.   It provides a number of functions formerly requiring a data logger, a large, expensive application-specific controller, and a surveillance camera.  These functions include:

• Logging data at a user-specified rate,
• Entering calibration values including zero and span for its alarm function,
• Generating alarms based on user set thresholds and optional user-specified filter output. 
• Five solid state alarm relay closures are provided including four normally open contacts and one normally closed contact.
• Displaying data on its internal display,
• Uploading raw data, filtered data, and an alarm log with date and time stamps to the Sensor Companion™ Support Software installed on the user’s host computer,
• Photographing the portable unit’s immediate environment when triggered by an alarm or at a user-defined time interval,
• Allowing the user to recall and document the data points leading up to and including an alarm.

The Sensor Companion™ Support Software package shipped with the portable unit provides the user with significant additional capabilities including:

• The ability to upload and display data from the portable unit,
• Calculate and display statistics specified by the user, for example moving averages,
• Format Excel spreadsheet reports of raw data, filtered data, alarm history including date and time stamp, and simulated alarm data where historical data is run through user-specified filters and alarm thresholds,
• Accept alarm thresholds and digital filter coefficients from the user, simulate user-specified alarms based on historical data, and generate a statistical report on alarm performance including misdetections and false alarm rate,
• Download alarm settings, alarm configuration information, user-supplied filter coefficients and alarm criteria provided by the user to the portable unit.
• Time stamp and organize pictures captured by the local unit either programmed to capture pictures based on an alarm or at regular intervals.
